FAQ
Ask us anything.
What people ask most about getting licensed, training, pay, leads, and the first few weeks. If your question isn’t here, ask us. We’d love to hear it.
Getting started
No. People come to this work from retail, restaurants, warehouses, healthcare, offices, and businesses of their own. Your background doesn’t decide what you can become here. Bring the willingness to learn, and we’ll teach you the business from the ground up.
No. Many people start without it. Early on, showing up consistently and taking coaching well matter more than a polished pitch. The conversation is a skill, and you’ll practice it in training before you talk with clients.
People who already know how to work hard and want that effort to start building something of their own. If you take coaching well and show up when nobody’s checking, we want to talk with you.
You set your own schedule and you’re paid on commission, so the drive has to come from you.
NovaPoint Financial is the life insurance agency and producer team we’re growing, built for hardworking people from every background. We take care of your pre-licensing course, help you get licensed, and teach you the business, with mentors close by as you start working with clients.
You’ll train and grow with the NovaPoint team. Contracting and carrier appointments run through a licensed distribution organization, and each carrier decides on appointment. We’ll walk you through every step.
Someone from the NovaPoint team will reach out to set up a first conversation. We’ll walk you through how the path works and answer whatever you want to ask. We want to get to know you, too. There’s no pressure, and nothing gets decided on that first call.
Licensing
Yes, you’ll need a state license before you sell insurance. You don’t need one to apply, and you won’t have to figure out how to get it on your own. We’ll show you what your state requires and help you take the first steps toward your license.
Yes. We take care of your pre-licensing course, so you can focus on learning and getting started. Exam, license application, and fingerprinting fees are separate and vary by state, and we’ll help you plan for them.
It’s the course many states require before you can sit for the licensing exam. You learn how life insurance works and the rules that govern it, and many courses are online, so you can study around your current schedule.
It depends on your state’s requirements, how much time you can study each week, exam availability, and how quickly your state processes applications. We’ll help you keep moving through each step, from the course to your license.
We take care of the pre-licensing course. The other usual costs are the state exam fee, the license application, and in many states fingerprinting or a background check. Amounts vary by state, and we’ll help you map out what it looks like where you live.
Yes, and it moves faster. You skip pre-licensing and go straight to contracting, carrier appointments, and getting plugged into training and mentorship with the team.
Work structure
Producers on the NovaPoint team are independent contractors, not employees, generally paid on a 1099 basis. That means you’re running your own business on your own schedule. You contract through a licensed distribution organization and handle your own business expenses and taxes, and a good tax professional can help you set that up right from the start.
Much of it, yes. A lot of the work happens by phone and video, so you can meet with families from home. Some clients will want to sit down in person, and carrier and state rules apply wherever you work.
Yes. Many people start part-time while keeping their current job, and evenings are valuable because that’s when a lot of families are free to talk. Progress follows the hours and consistency you bring, so protect that time. As you get going, aim for 20 to 30+ focused hours a week. That’s the commitment that gives you room to learn the business well.
You do. You decide when you work and how much, around the life you already have. Training sessions and client appointments have set times, and the team keeps a daily rhythm you can build your week around. Flexible doesn’t mean effortless, so pick your hours and keep them.
Not much: a reliable computer, a solid internet connection, a phone, and a quiet place to talk. We’ll cover the rest in training.
Compensation
You earn a commission on every policy you write that’s issued and paid. It’s a percentage of the premium, and the rate depends on the carrier, the product, and your contract level. That’s what makes this different from an hourly job: your activity and your skill show up directly in the business you write.
Some carriers advance part of the first-year commission when a policy is issued. If a policy lapses early, the unearned part can be charged back. There’s no salary and no guaranteed income.
Your income comes from the policies you write that are issued and paid, so the effort you bring and the skill you build have somewhere to go. It won’t happen automatically or overnight.
We don’t publish income figures, because results vary widely with effort, skill, time, market, and expenses, and some people earn little or nothing. When we talk, we’ll walk you through exactly how compensation works so you can see it for yourself.
Yes. Like any business, this one has startup costs. With the pre-licensing course taken care of, the usual ones are your state exam and license fees, basic equipment, and the errors and omissions (E&O) coverage many carriers require. Leads and marketing are investments you can choose to make in your business, on your terms. We’ll lay it all out on your first call so you can plan with confidence.
Leads
No. Your business doesn’t have to start and end with people you already know. Producers work with people who reach out asking about coverage, with referrals, and with lead sources that connect them with families who have asked about coverage. Whether you tell the people in your life about your work is up to you.
A lead is someone who has raised their hand and said they’re interested in coverage. Some come from online inquiries, others from referrals or events, and they vary in cost and quality. Working them well comes down to a steady follow-up routine, and that’s something we coach.
Many do. Buying leads gives you a way to reach people who have already shown interest in coverage. We’ll help you compare sources, set a budget, and build a follow-up routine. Leads don’t guarantee appointments or sales, so the skill you build is what makes the most of them.
Yes, and following them is part of doing this work professionally. Outreach has to respect consent requirements, do-not-call rules, and carrier and state regulations. We cover the basics in training, and as an independent producer, staying compliant is your responsibility.
Training
The products, compliance, the sales process, the systems you’ll work from, and how to run a conversation people trust. You learn it from people who know how to do this, with plenty of practice before your first client conversation.
Training keeps going long after your first weeks, so you keep sharpening your skills while you work.
Yes. Mentorship is at the center of how the NovaPoint team works. You’ll have a mentor you can reach while you learn the business, and a team around you that wants to see you win. You’re independent, and you’re not alone.
ProducerPoint is a workspace built for life insurance producers, so a new producer can start with a system instead of a blank screen. A guided Call Companion gives every call structure, scripts and talk tracks stay organized, an objection library sits one click away, and follow-ups and the workday live in one place.
ProducerPoint guides the structure, and the producer makes every call and chooses every answer. ProducerPoint is the workspace at the center of how NovaPoint structures the producer experience, and access for NovaPoint agents is rolling out. Ask us about it when we talk.
